Inactive status is an election made at renewal that preserves the license with a reduced or waived education requirement. Retired status, where offered, sometimes permits limited volunteer practice. A lapse is not a status at all — it is a failure to renew, and it carries the hardest route back.
Career breaks, caregiving, further study and retirement all raise the same question, and the answer is easier if it is asked before the renewal date rather than after.
Inactive status

Reactivation is an application with defined requirements, which is considerably lighter than reinstating a lapsed license.
Retired status
Not every state offers it. Where it exists it sometimes permits limited volunteer practice, occasionally with its own education requirement.
For a clinician who intends occasional charitable work, this is frequently the better fit than inactive.
A lapse is not a plan
Lapsing is what happens by default. It is reportable, it appears on endorsement applications in other states, and reinstatement typically requires more documentation and more education than reactivation does.
Every board treats a deliberate election better than an omission.
The certification question
National certification renews on its own terms and does not pause because your license is inactive. Practice hours requirements are the difficulty during a break.
Letting the certification lapse alongside the license usually turns a straightforward reactivation into an examination.
The RN license underneath
Decide about both. Keeping the registered nurse license current while the advanced license is inactive preserves options and is often inexpensive.
It also means the pathway back does not start from nothing.
Reactivation requirements
Expect continuing education for the inactive period, verification of certification, and sometimes a refresher requirement if the break was long.
Reading those rules at the start of the break rather than the end is what makes them manageable.
Tell the board before the date
The election happens at renewal. A clinician who simply stops practicing without electing anything has lapsed, not gone inactive.
Diarize it exactly as you would an active renewal.
Consider a short break differently
For a break of a year or less, maintaining active status is frequently cheaper and simpler than the round trip through inactive and back.
Compare the fees and requirements before deciding, because the intuitive answer is not always the cheaper one.
Compact considerations
A multistate registered nurse license depends on your primary state of residence, and changing status or moving during a break affects it.
Where you expect to return to practice in a compact state, keeping that license active is usually the simplest choice.
Employers and gaps
A documented inactive period reads very differently from an unexplained gap with a lapsed license behind it.
Electing a status is partly a licensing decision and partly a record you will be asked about later.
